Tapingo and Star Micronics Team Up to Simplify Mobile Commerce for the Retail Industry

Tapingo, Inc. recently set out to dramatically improve the customer experience for quick service and pick-up food ordering both in traditional retail environments and on college campuses. Tapingo, a leader in the mobile ordering and payment industry, wanted a solution that would deliver a great experience to their customers and tightly integrate with their partners to provide unforgettable service.


Tapingo’s solution includes native iPhone® and Android™ applications, as well as online ordering. Customers can browse menus, customize their items, and pay for orders directly from their phone. Credit card, PayPal, and Campus Cards are all accepted through the system.

To make things easy for retail merchants, Tapingo can integrate with most point of sale systems and Star Micronics thermal receipt printers. This integration notifies staff of incoming orders received from Tapingo. Simple setup allows merchants to start accepting Tapingo in a short amount of time and with nearly zero operational impact.

Recently, Tapingo took their mobile ordering experience one step further with their Active Cashier™ solution. The solution places a wirelessly connected tablet and thermal receipt printer in the merchant location to enable merchants to notify customers about the real-time status of their order. For the first time, customers can place their order in advance and receive updates about order preparation times and when their order is ready for pick-up.

When developing the Active Cashier™, Tapingo did extensive research into several areas in order to develop a “first of its kind” retail tablet solution. First, they had to determine that a wireless tablet was reliable enough to receive retail orders remotely. Second, they wanted a solution with the ability to print receipts with the same level of performance seen by traditional point of sale systems. Finally, Tapingo’s award-winning product development team set out to craft a solution that would be intuitive for retail staff to operate with little training in order to accept and manage Tapingo orders easily.

Tapingo’s solution includes technologies from a variety of cloud, software, and hardware vendors. The hardware supported includes two Star Micronics printers: TSP143LAN and TSP654II BTi.

  • Each of the Star Micronics printers used provides a variety of features for the solution: TSP143LAN: a dedicated Ethernet printer that can easily be connected to your network. The printer includes an “Error Reporting Feature” which indicates if there has been a lost network connection by flashing its “error” lights. 
  • TSP654II BTi: offers operating system support for iOS, Android and Windows, is Apple MFi certified, and is approved for use with the iPod touch®, iPhone® and iPad®. 

Tapingo and Star Micronics each brought their own particular domain expertise to the project as well as forward looking vision of the retail landscape including changes like the value of tablets and mobile ordering.
